When Uncle Charlie's first opened its doors in 1981, Windhoek was a smaller city, and a good piece of furniture had to last. Families bought their first dining tables knowing they'd serve grandchildren one day. Workshops shipped in pieces hand-built to outlive a generation. We grew up in that world — and we never quite left it.
Four decades later, plenty has changed. The city has grown. Styles have come and gone. Flat-packs have replaced craftsmanship in many showrooms. But what hasn't changed is what walks through our doors: people looking for something real. Something with a bit of weight to it. Something that, if you give it a clean and a polish, will outlast whatever's trending this year.
Today, Uncle Charlie's is still family-run, still on Ruhr Street, and still doing the same three things we've always done: selling beautiful furniture (new, pre-loved, vintage and antique), buying it back when our customers are ready to move on, and offering quick, fair pawn services to anyone who needs them. No drama. No fuss. Just forty-four years of doing right by Windhoek.
If you've never been in before, consider this your invitation. Pop down to the showroom on Ruhr Street, have a wander, and don't be surprised if you walk out with something you didn't know you needed.
Whether you're buying a sofa, selling an old wardrobe, or pawning a piece — you'll get a fair number, explained plainly. No tricks, no fine print designed to catch you out.
Every piece on our floor gets inspected before it goes out. If it doesn't meet our standard, it doesn't get sold. Simple as that.
We've been here long enough to know that the customer who walks in today might come back in five years — or send their daughter, or their neighbour. Treating people well isn't a strategy. It's the whole job.
Uncle Charlie's opens its first showroom in Windhoek, with a single promise: fair prices, fair deals, and furniture that lasts.
Word of mouth carries us through the decade. We become the go-to address for Windhoek families furnishing first homes, and for anyone in need of a quick, trustworthy pawn.
We add a dedicated antique and vintage section, tracking down character pieces from across the country to bring something different to the floor.
Our showroom finds its home at 4 Ruhr Street, Northern Industrial — a bigger floor, more storage, and room to keep growing the collection.
Forty-four years on, the family is still running the floor. We've added WhatsApp ordering, curbside pickup, and a few digital conveniences — but the handshake at the front desk is exactly the same.
The showroom is open six days a week. Whether you're browsing, selling or pawning — we'd love to meet you.
